Biophilic Skincare™

“If design doesn’t focus on aspects of the natural world that contribute to human health and productivity in the age-old struggle to be fit and survive, it’s not biophilic.”

~ Stephen R. Kellert (1943-2016) Professor Emeritus of Social Ecology & Senior Research Scholar, School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University

Persica Skincare is the first and only skincare company to establish and embody the concept of Biophilic Skincare™, the principle that skin thrives in closeness with nature.

The concept of biophilic design was introduced in 1984 by E.O. Wilson in his book Biophilia. Wilson was a renowned biologist and Professor Emeritus at Harvard University, and outlined a fundamental tendency of human beings to be attracted to nature and emulate its processes and structures in everyday life. As we increasingly orient ourselves towards living quality-driven and healthy lifestyles, biophilic design recognizes the value and healthfulness of incorporating natural elements directly into modern design aesthetic.

As the body’s largest organ, and an essential barrier between ourselves and the environment, the skin is intrinsically connected to nature. It is the part of us that makes first contact with outside elements. The skin is the origin point of the microbiome’s protective role in determining which environmental elements to absorb, and which to restrict. Human skin has evolved for millions of years by and through exposure to nature. Recognizing the importance of our skin’s symbiotic and inherent connection to nature is a central feature of Persica Skincare, and drives our devotion to creating luxurious plant-based skincare.

By creating skincare that is free from synthetics, devoted to botanical ingredients, and environmentally clean, we honor the skin’s natural condition and relationship with nature. Incorporating Biophilic Skincare™ into how we formulate skincare is why our products are hypoallergenic, suitable for those with sensitive skin or skin disorders, and so utterly transformative. Dr. Stephen Kellert, a pioneer of biophilic study, explained in 2015 that “the fundamental goal of biophilic design is to create good habitat for people as biological organisms inhabiting modern structures, landscapes, and communities.” Persica Skincare now extends this goal to skincare, by translating the five conditions outlined by Dr. Kellert in 2015 to topical applications.

The Five Tenets
of Biophilic Skincare™

Our products emphasize human adaptations to the natural world by relying on botanical essential oils derived from the invention of steam distillation in ancient Persia, and resins and butters obtained through thousands of years of traditional human medicinal practice.

We encourage repeated and sustained engagement with our natural skincare products to strengthen the skin’s natural microbiome, not disrupt it.

We integrate nature into the design of our products completely by creating 100% plant-based botanical skincare, as opposed to synthetic products that may contain only a few botanicals.

Our skincare satisfies our inherent inclination to affiliate with nature by including aromatherapeutic aspects, promoting education about the topical uses of plants, minimizing nature-disrupting elements such as plastics, and encouraging slow beauty principles.

We encourage positive and sustained relationships between people and the environment by creating products that do not contain environmental contaminants, endocrine disruptors, or questionable sourcing practices, and encouraging awareness of and respect for natural ingredients.
